Elk in Catalooche

Elk graze in the fields of Catalooche Valley in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the late afternoon. Catalooche Valley is on the east side of the Great Smoky Mountains and is the site of the first elk reintroduction in 2001. The only road in the valley can be lined with cars and visitors in the early mornings and late evening as they view some of the roughly 150-200 elk that live in the valley.
